What Is NIDS?

NIDS is a Simple, Safe and Secure way of verifying your identity.

What Is the NIC?

The National Identification Card is a simple, safe, and secure document to verify your identity.

Is enrolment in the NIDS mandatory?

No. Enrolling for a National Identification Card is voluntary.

Who will manage the NIDS (NIC and database)?

The NIRA will manage the issuance of NIC, its databases and the civil registry of Jamaica.

Is the NIC free?

Yes. Enrolment in the NIDS is FREE.

Who Can Enrol in the NIDS?

ALL Jamaican Citizens and Ordinary Residents including children.

What is the National Identification Number (NIN)?

During enrolment a random 9-digit number will be assigned to the applicant.

For person who already have a TRN, the NIN will use the existing TRN.

Do you need a TRN number to apply for the NIDS?

No.

Is The ID Card Renewable?

Yes. The ID card will be renewable every five years for persons under the age of 18 and every ten years for persons 18 years and older.

Is there a cost to renew, update or replace the NIC?

No cost to renew a NIC. A nominal fee will be applied to replace a missing card.

What information will be displayed on the ID Card?

Only minimum information will be displayed on the ID card to protect your privacy.

Will I still need more than one ID to do business if I enrol in the NIDS?

No. One ID accepted everywhere.

Will I have to share/provide for blood type or DNA?

No. NIRA will only collect 3 forms of biometrics: Your facial image; Your signature; Your fingerprint

Will the police have access to my fingerprint and data?

No.

Can the NIC be used as a travel document?

Not at this time.

Will the custom/immigration form that now has to be completed be eliminated for those with the NIC?

No. Customs will still require information for clearing of goods.

Will the Voter’s ID still be valid if I get the NIC?

Yes

Can a business place withhold service from me if I present only a NIDS card to verify my identity?

No.

Will NIC replace other forms of identity documents?

No.
