Our National Identification System (NIDS) is the primary source of identity assurance for Jamaicans. With this digital ID, Jamaican citizens and residents can now access online and inline public and private digital services. 

Benefits Of The National Identification Card (NIC)

  • It is FREE – You are entitled to a free ID card thus reducing the identity verification cost to the enrolled individual (citizens and residents). 
  • Protects & Secures – Prevents identity theft and other instances of fraud with respect to identity information. 
  • Transparency in Identity verification – Gives more control to the enrolled individual over their identity information. 
  • ONE ID  – Eliminates the need for multiple forms of identity documents when conducting business. 
  • Simplification of Bureaucracy – Reduces the need for identity verification from Notary Publics/Justice of the Peace. 
  • Easier access to pension benefits – Eliminates the need for life certificates for pensioners.
  • Digital Signature – Provides for each enrolled individual a digital signature that can be used to electronically sign documents.
  • Access to Financial Services: To open bank accounts, and carry out online financial transactions.
  • E-commerce (To conduct transactions securely online).
  • E-Government (For Citizens to access and use Government services e.g. collecting benefits).
  • Easier, fairer and more equitable administration of social benefits.
  • The National Identification Card will support the identification of potential beneficiaries and the determination of benefit eligibility for social programmes.
  • Members of the Diaspora can get a National Identification Card.
  • Your consent will be required for an entity to verify your identity and you will be notified each time your identity is verified.
  • The NIDS is subject to the Data Protection Act.

What Do I Need To Apply For A National ID?

Enrolling for a National Identification Card is easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Applicants register online for an appointment date,
  2. Applicants visit an enrolment centre with supporting documents to enrol,
  3. Information is collected and verified.
  4. A NIC is issued.  

Only the necessary information to create your unique identity will be required to sign up for NIDS: 

  • Full name (including any names used prior to a change of name by deed poll or marriage);
  • Date of birth;
  • Country of birth;
  • Place of birth;
  • Names of mother and father;
  • Whether the individual is male or female, as recorded on the individual’s birth certificate;
  • Birth Certificate or Birth Entry Number (for persons born in Jamaica);
  • Facial image (Live Capture) ;
  • Fingerprints (Live Capture);
  • Manual signature for persons eighteen years of age or older.;
  • Certification of citizenship (i.e. Jamaicans via naturalisation);
  • Passport number and approval by PICA regarding residency status; 
  • Driver’s Licence Number;
  • Tax Registration Number (if applicable);
  • National Insurance number (if applicable);
  • Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education (PATH) number;
  • Electoral ID Number;
  • Deed Poll (proof of name change);
  • Marital status;
  • Marriage Certificate;
  • Name of spouse (if applicable);
  • Principal place of residence and, where applicable any other places of residence;
  • Period of residence in Jamaica (in the case of an individual who is not a citizen of Jamaica);
  • Occupation.

Who Can Verify My NIC

Any entity that meets the IT and security infrastructure criteria of the Data Protection Act can act as a Third Party for the verification of identity. These entities include but are not limited to:

  1. Government Ministry, Department, Agency (MDAs)
  2. Financial Deposit taking institutions
